The 22nd meeting of the FAO Working Group on the Assessment of Small Pelagics in Northwest Africa will be held from 25 June to 2 July 2024 in Dakar, Senegal. This crucial event brings together about twenty experts on the premises of the Sub-Regional Fisheries Commission (CSRP) to discuss and assess the region's fisheries resources.

The meeting began with the opening remarks of the Permanent Secretary of the CSRP, followed by presentations by the participants. These presentations covered recent developments in the field of fisheries and provided an overview of recent relevant research activities carried out since the last meeting of the Working Group

The main objective of this week-long seminar is to provide an accurate and up-to-date assessment of small pelagic fish, which are essential for the sustainable management of fisheries in the region, using the latest data and the most advanced assessment models. Experts hope to propose effective strategies for the conservation and sustainable use of these crucial resources.

Discussions and analyses will focus on updating stock assessments of small pelagics, future stock projections, exploiting stock assessments using alternative models and making recommendations based on new data and analyses.

This meeting promises to be an important platform for knowledge sharing, strengthening regional cooperation and formulating practical recommendations for governments and stakeholders involved in fisheries management in Northwest Africa. Through this collaborative effort, the experts aim to improve the sustainability and resilience of fisheries resources, thus ensuring food security and the livelihoods of local communities.
